MCG 8151 Flexible Magnetostrictive Level Probe

Overview

MCG 8151

For terminal operators, refinery engineers, wastewater process managers, and EPC system integrators who need accurate, continuous liquid-level and interface measurement in tanks with limited access or movement, the MCG 8151 Flexible Magnetostrictive Level Probe offers an ideal solution. This probe delivers 0.001 inch resolution, average temperature sensing, and multi-interface detection in a flexible, corrosion-resistant PVDF housing. Unlike rigid probes or float-based transmitters, the MCG 8151 is flexible for easy installation in tanks up to 70 ft deep, supports dual-float operation for product and interface levels, and integrates five embedded RTDs for true average product temperature.

Features

Flexible Design

Flexible Design

The PVDF construction allows the probe to be bent and coiled, simplifying installation into underground, horizontal, or irregular tanks through small 2″–4″ openings.

Custody-Grade Accuracy

Provides industry-leading 0.001 inch resolution for both level and interface readings, essential for custody transfer, blending, and inventory management.

Dual Level Measurement

Dual Level Measurement

Supports dual-float operation to simultaneously monitor the product level and the interface level (e.g., oil/water), providing crucial data for contamination detection.

Integrated Temperature Sensing

Integrated Temperature Averaging

Features five embedded RTDs to measure product temperature at different points, calculating a true average for automatic volume correction per API 2540.

Point-Switch Functionality

Acts as both a continuous transmitter and a high/low level alarm, minimizing the need for separate, dedicated point switches.

Proven Stability

Proven Stability

Uses Magnetostrictive Technology (Wiedemann Effect) to provide long-term stability with no mechanical wear or drift.

FAQs

We have tried to answer the most common questions we are asked here.

A flexible probe is ideal for tanks that are deep (up to 70 ft), horizontal, or have limited access risers. It can be easily coiled for shipping and dropped through small tank openings (2-inch or 3-inch) without requiring scaffolding or major construction, significantly reducing installation time and cost.

The probe uses a dual-float system. One float is heavy enough to sink through the product and rest on the water/product interface (for the interface level), while a second, lighter float rides on the top surface of the liquid (for the product level). The magnetostrictive receiver tracks the position of both magnetic floats simultaneously.

Yes. The five embedded RTDs allow the probe to accurately map the vertical temperature profile of the product, mitigating errors caused by thermal stratification. This calculated true average temperature is a fundamental requirement for achieving the high accuracy and compliance standards (API 2540) needed for custody transfer.
